SUMMARY:Screening of 'The Angola 3'
DESCRIPTION:This is the first of two screenings of the documentary “The Angola 3: Black Panthers and the Last Slave Plantation” by the Maywood Public Library.  \nFrom snagfilms.com: “THE ANGOLA 3: BLACK PANTHERS AND THE LAST SLAVE PLANTATION tells the gripping story of Robert King Wilkerson\, Herman Wallace and Albert Woodfox\, men who have endured solitary confinement longer then any known living prisoner in the United States. Politicized through contact with the Black Panther Party while inside Louisiana’s prisons\, they formed one of the only prison Panther chapters in history and worked to organize other prisoners into a movement for the right to live like human beings. This documentary explores their extraordinary struggle for justice while incarcerated in Angola\, a former slave plantation where institutionalized rape and murder made it known as one of the most brutal and racist prisons in the United States.”

SUMMARY:Screening of 'The Black Panthers'
DESCRIPTION:The Broadview Public Library will screen the documentary “The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution.” There will be a guided discussion of the film by Dr. Johnson. \nFrom pbs.org: “In the turbulent 1960s\, change was coming to America and the fault lines could no longer be ignored — cities were burning\, Vietnam was exploding\, and disputes raged over equality and civil rights. A new revolutionary culture was emerging and it sought to drastically transform the system. The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense would\, for a short time\, put itself at the vanguard of that change.  The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution is the first feature-length documentary to explore the Black Panther Party\, its significance to the broader American culture\, its cultural and political awakening for black people\, and the painful lessons wrought when a movement derails.”  \nNote: The location of this event is subject to change due to ongoing construction. Visit the library’s website for updates.

SUMMARY:100 Years of Black History
DESCRIPTION:The Bellwood Public Library will host “100 Years of Black History Presented by Storyteller Linda Gorham.” \nAn East African proverb states: “Until the lion starts writing down his story\, the hunter will always be the hero.” \nIn this program\, the Bellwood Public Library celebrates African American heroes who have made phenomenal contributions to this country over the past 100 years — often under difficult circumstances. Linda Gorham incorporates music\, personal narrative\, quotes and interesting facts to celebrate over 30 African American men and women.  \nThis program aligns with One Book\, One Proviso’s mission to highlight critical\, but often overlooked\, aspects of African American history throughout the year.

SUMMARY:One Book\, One Proviso Digital Launch
DESCRIPTION:On Aug. 30\, 1948\, Black Panther leader Fred Hampton was born in Summit\, Ill. His family would eventually move to Maywood\, where he grew up during his formative years. To remember Fred’s life and legacy\, as well as the legacy of the Black Panthers\, we’ve selected Black Against Empire: The History and Politics of the Black Panther Party by Joshua Bloom and Waldo E. Martin\, Jr. as our inaugural One Book\, One Proviso selection. \nAll day on Aug. 30\, we encourage readers throughout Proviso Township to visit our Facebook page (@1book1proviso)\, Twitter page (@oneproviso) and our website (1book1proviso.com) to comment on Black Against Empire. \nWe’ll also be updating readers on where to buy or check out  the book\, which libraries will offer programming related to the book and/or Fred Hampton’s life\, how to create their own One Book\, One Proviso programs and how to enter One Book’s $1\,000 essay contest. \nOh\, one last (but VERY important thing)! Every day from Aug. 30 until Dec. 4 (the day Fred was assassinated in Chicago by law enforcement authorities)\, we’ll be posting a brief nugget about Fred Hampton’s life on our website\, and our Facebook and Twitter pages. We’re calling this project: #MaywoodRemembers
